4 Delicious Winter Dishes from Around the World

4 Delicious Winter Dishes from Around the World

There is nothing nicer than tucking into a hearty, nutritious meal when temperatures plummet and it's shatteringly chilly outside. Here are a few favourites from around the world that will warm you from the inside out. Don’t forget your favourite Château Gâteaux slice on the side to perfectly complement any of these delicious dishes!

This dish is not a South African sarmie you make for the kids to eat during school break, but a Sarmi from Bulgaria, which sounds quite delicious. Made with rolled vine or cabbage leaves and stuffed with rice, minced meat and spices, the Sarmi is warming, healthy and tastes divine. Dipping it in creamy Bulgarian yoghurt takes it to the next level. By the way, this Sarmi transforms into a vegetarian dish by filling it with raisins or walnuts instead, making it oh-so moreish. Either way, if you team this dish with a melt-in-the-mouth Mississippi Mud Pie (available in 6-packs) it will fuel you to take a brisk afternoon walk in the wintry sun and still be warm when you get home.

Iceland, the land of Fire and Ice, is renowned for its superb fish cuisine. Fish soup, Fiskisúpa, is a firm winter favourite which warms you through and through, but a speciality is Plokkfiskur. Succulent pieces of haddock, potatoes, onions and a béchamel sauce make up this heart-warming, delectable and filling fish stew. Of course, to mop up the delicious sauce, a thick slice of rye bread is an essential accompaniment. We wonder what you would choose from our virtual cake stand as the finishing touch to this excellent meal? Our Andrea’s Baked Cheesecake with a tumble of raspberries and blueberries sounds good to us! Yum, followed by more yum!

Originating in the snowy Alps, Cheese Fondue is a traditional and popular winter warmer in Switzerland. On cold winter evenings, this is the perfect meal to share with a group of friends. A combo of Gruyère and Emmental cheese is slowly melted in a large pot, together with some other essential ingredients, until hot and gooey. Chunks of crusty bread and soft-boiled potato or pear slices are speared with long thin forks and dipped into the communal cheese pot. Can you begin to imagine how delicious this forkful tastes? Although this is a filling meal you couldn’t possibly go without your fave Château Gâteaux treat, could you? A slice of the delectable Black Forest Cake with a few cherries will do just the trick!

Here's a hot drink with a difference – Anijsmelk. This Dutch drink consists of hot milk, flavoured with aniseed and sweetened with honey. What could be nicer on a cold winter's day?! Well, a cheeky slice of Château Gâteaux of course! Have a bite of Chocolate Mozart heaven, and a warm, delicious sip; or consider our 4 Chocolate Variety with a little something for everyone; a fudgy, gooey Boston Brownie; or molten Chocolate Volcano. The options are endless at the home of cake!

Need we say more?

Keep warm and cosy with a piece of Château Gâteaux on the side. It’s never too cold for cake!
