Where we are born has enormous significance in our lives. Even if you mostly live elsewhere in the country or another country altogether, your place of birth roots you in your mind and, of course, legally. In most cases, you can inherit the nationality of the country of your birth, even though you may have moved with your parents to the other side of the world as a baby. If you were born on a farm in the Karoo, would you not feel differently about yourself than being born in Johannesburg? Perhaps your love of wide-open spaces comes from the mere knowledge that you were born on a farm. Well, we have a homegrown story about where one is born to share with you, of which we are very proud!
Because of his profound love for everything baked, our Founding Master Patissier qualified in his craft after studying in Vienna, Rome and Paris. Where better to hone your skills than in countries which perfected the art of baking fine cakes? His search for the perfect cake was inspired by family recipes handed down to him by his Gran and Mom. He travelled the world to fine-tune his skills and knowledge, especially the art of blast-freezing to retain freshness and flavour. After working as a pastry chef in his new home town, he decided to start his own business and became the ‘parent’ of a fledgling bakery. So, in 1997 Château Gâteaux was born - in Durban.
The nursery kitchen was set up in a converted warehouse in Sydney Road, where our Master Patissier and his small team baked and supplied cakes to hotels, restaurants and coffee shops. Time moved on, and like all teenagers, space was needed for the much bigger enterprise that Château Gâteaux was growing into. A fabulous new high-tech factory in Riverhorse Valley north of Durban was acquired to cope with increasing orders. In 2011 the first of a series of world-class, walk-in patisserie outlets was established for cake lovers to enjoy a slice of something deliciously nice, knowing they were being served a Château Gâteaux speciality. So here we are in 2021 in the home town of the twenty-four-year-old Château Gâteaux boasting six glittering gateaux outlets in Durban alone and 17 stores nationally! Wow!
