Stop and Smell The Roses
You don’t have to be a gardener to love roses as they have a beauty all of their own. Roses are recognised the world over as the queen of flowers and to receive a bunch of red roses from your lover has to be one of the most romantic gifts…except for cake! What tugs on the heart strings more than cake dear reader? Join us as we explore the beauty of the ravishing rose.
October is rose month in South Africa – in the first flush of the season, roses bloom everywhere.
On pavements, tumbling over walls, in a sunny garden corner or massed in large flower beds. Roses are thought to have originated in Central Asia then spread and grew wild over the entire Northern Hemisphere. They have been cultivated for about 5 000 years and have since become an intimate part of human civilisation.
Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, loved roses and she started one of the first rose collections of over 250 varieties in her garden at Château de Malmaison in Paris. Just like the fabulous collection of cakes, coffees and accessories which we, Château Gâteaux, have on offer through our online shop or at one of our stores.
Over centuries, and through cross-pollination of various strains of roses, the rose cultivars we know today came into being. We have Hybrid Tea Roses – meaning one stunning flower head at the end of each long stem. The name ‘tea’ rose came about during the early days of hybridising when botanists thought the newly-opened flowers had the fragrance of an exquisite cup of tea. Any exquisite cup of tea needs to be accompanied by an exquisite slice of cake – try our Rococo Chocolate Cake for a taste of elegance.
Floribunda roses were specially created to bloom throughout summer, with many blooms on one stem – mini vases of flowers decorating the whole shrub. TOP TIP: You too can decorate and style your Château Gâteaux cakes with roses, rose petals or a simple but beautiful vase of roses on your serving table. Style your Vanilla Dream or Swiss Carrot Cake with a mixture of white, light pink and orange coloured roses. You can decorate our chocolate cakes such as the Chocolate Nostalgia, B-1 or Black Forest Cake with roses that have a much deeper shade of pink or red.
There are many modern roses to choose from – climbing, carpet, standard, panarosa, scrambling, miniature, spire and more. Roses have unique fragrances, and capturing their tantalisingly elusive scents has been the passion of ancient civilisations and is the pursuit of many perfume houses today. Our queen of flowers come in an unimaginable palette of beautiful colours, and the different flower shapes are all magnificent – each one very different. Still, without question, each one is definitely a rose. Just as each of our cakes is very different, but undoubtedly each one is definitely a deliciously handcrafted, scrumptious cake - made with love, from our kitchen to yours.
Every July into early August, roses are pruned to cut away old stems and to open up and reshape the bush. Then follows a period of feeding and nurturing to ensure that the October flush is perfect and lovely. Nurture yourself this October – stop and smell the roses. Notice the little things. Be in the present moment and take time out to appreciate and celebrate the beauty around you. How, you ask? Why not have a picnic in a beautiful rose garden, accompanied by a tea-time treat of one of our mini creations? Or simply indulge in a me-moment; savoring your slice of heaven from your friends #TheCakePeople.
