Under African Skies

Under African Skies

How lucky are we to live under an African sky, more especially under an African night sky? We think we are the luckiest people in the world. As our evenings warm-up, we are more likely to spend time outdoors at night. Look up, dear reader and marvel at what you can see at night with the naked eye. You will see what our ancestors have been seeing since recorded time, and hardly much has changed – for thousands of years, the sky is now as it was then.  An incredible thought and an incredible sight.

So let us plan an evening dinner under the stars. Think of your menu – something you can prepare in advance that does not require your attention in the kitchen.   A succulent cold roast chicken with side salads, or maybe you would like to have a braai so you can soak up the stars as you cook. You choose. What you must also choose is one of our Signature Baked Cheesecakes for dessert – they are baked to perfection and oh-so moreish – ideal for your alfresco feast. If you can’t choose just one flavour, why not order our 4 Cheesecake Variety? Then you can have your cake and eat it too!

Are you ready? Switch off the lights and revel in the sparkle above you and the delicious meal you have prepared.  Did you know there is a telltale way to identify whether you have spotted a star or a planet?  If the light sparkles, it is a star, but if it doesn’t sparkle and is stationary, it is a planet. Start spotting sparkles. You can always be sure you will be seeing stars in our gorgeous razzberry freezers found in stores, where we have a delectable range of cakes and treats for you to take home and enjoy.

There is nothing more romantic than a full moon. Full moon for November, December and January occurs during the daytime or shortly after midnight – beautiful, but not quite as romantic as in the evening. There is a Valentine’s treat in store for you in February 2022, however. We are giving you lots and lots of time to prepare for a special date. Full moon takes place on February 16, so on February 14, there will be just a tiny slice of moon missing – more than enough bright moonlight to romance with your lover.  And that missing slice of moon will be on your plate in the form of our quite delectable Vanilla Dream cake - or order a 6 pack from our Mini Collection and pair it with two super chilled glasses of something delicious!

We have learned that if you can spot the moon and a planet in the night sky and trace an imaginary line between the two, you will have identified the path (the ecliptic plane) that the sun takes during the day between rising and setting.  We’re ‘caking’ astronomers out of us all – how cool?

For thousands of years, astrology, now considered a pseudoscience, has fascinated humans with the concept of two-dimensional pictures and shapes (constellations) created by connecting the stars in the sky to myths and legends from cultures around the world. This concept is known as the Western zodiac and is made up of twelve constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. However, it is wondrous to identify these constellations in the sky and to know that they were once essential instruments that marked the passage of time and the seasons. Constellations continue to be of value orientating astronomers and stargazers in the night sky.

Château Gâteaux has its own constellation… of cakes, from delicious to more delicious, from small to large and from frozen to fabulous.  Come and gaze at our star-studded collection at any one of our seventeen beautiful shops around the country and pick something that makes you sparkle.
