Each creation is baked from scratch and made by hand at our world-class bakery in Durban, South Africa.

Our History

Our story begins in 1997 with one man and his profound love for everything baked. Inspired by his mom and gran's recipes, Ilan Lipschitz, our founder, has travelled the world in his quest to find the perfect cake.

A qualified Master Patissier, he studied his art in Vienna, Rome and Paris to bring the best recipes in the world back to his home in South Africa. During his travels, he mastered the art of blast-freezing as a method to retain freshness and flavour without additional preservatives. This means each Château Gâteaux creation offers modern, low-waste, defrost-and-serve-convenience that tastes as good as it looks. The result is everything you see and taste today; exceptional quality, locked-in-freshness and attention to detail that goes beyond cake for pure indulgence that makes the moment even better.

Our staff are all highly-trained bakers who operate under the strictest, most hygienic conditions and are measured according to the highest possible standards and quality controls. Microbiological analysis, raw material traceability from farm-to-fork and food-safe stock management systems are all routine procedures that help us maintain the quality you've come to expect from Château Gâteaux.

We're proud to say that Château Gâteaux has embarked on a programme to eliminate as many environmentally damaging packaging materials as possible. All polystyrene has been replaced with 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials that protect and insulate our creations.

From Frozen To Fabulous

Simply Defrost And Enjoy Your Cake-Away.
We have perfected the art of sealed-in freshness through our unique fresh-to-frozen process. This means you can keep your delicious creation frozen for 8 to 12 months and defrost at your convenience. The locked-in flavour and quality never cease to amaze. Follow these guidelines, and you will be guaranteed an exceptional experience with every indulgent mouthful.

WHOLE GOURMET CAKES (Large: 12 Slices / Medium: 8 Slices)

Defrost in refrigerator overnight in original packaging OR

Remove from the packaging and defrost it at room temperature (see product specific label).

Cut slices as and when needed from a whole frozen cake and defrost the slices uncovered at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes.

Immediately return the remainder of the cake to the freezer in the original packaging so that you can enjoy another slice later.

MINI FROZEN DESSERTS AND TARTS

Remove from the packaging and place on serving plate or platter while frozen, retaining the clear plastic collar around the dessert to protect while handling (where applicable).

Defrost in a refrigerator overnight, or at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes.

Remove the plastic collar just before serving (where applicable).

Return the left-over defrosted desserts to refrigerator and cover so that they stay moist.

Consume within 3 days.

HOT PUDDINGS

If the product is still in paper or foil cup, remove while frozen by carefully lifting the edge of the cup and tearing it off the pudding.

Heat in the microwave for approximately 30 - 40 seconds (depending on the power of microwave) until the dessert is soft and the decadent sauce has melted onto the plate.

TOP TIP - Volcano products should be heated until the soft centre just oozes through the surface.

For the best experience – do not overheat.

Storage Tips:
If you purchased your baked masterpiece in a frozen state and place it in your freezer before it defrosts, you can store it for 8 to 12 months (see product-specific label). As if you can resist it for that long! For best results - once defrosted, the product should not be refrozen but can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Cake-Away Note:
Should you take home mini desserts or slices from our display chillers, please don’t freeze them. Instead, store them covered in the refrigerator and enjoy your goodies within 24 hours.
